The Cancer Genomics Cloud: Connecting Scientists Across the Globe

The 2nd DSI Africa Consortium Meeting kicked off on October 29th, 2022! This exciting conference brought together over 200 scientists and stakeholders from across Africa, and internationally. There, they exchanged ideas and showcased their work in Data Science and health.

One of the scientists in attendance was Judy Wawira Gichoya, Assistant Professor in the department of Interventional Radiology & Informatics at Emory University. Dr. Gichoya reached out to the team at Seven Bridges looking for a way to allow users to have hands-on experience with importing and analyzing data. Seven Bridges’ Cancer Genomics Cloud (CGC) partnered with Judy, who  provided us with several datasets to work with.

On the day of the workshop, CGC Program manager Dr. Zelia Worman introduced the Seven Bridges platform, and the Cancer Genomics Cloud. She then led a thoughtful discussion on data harmonization using cloud resources. The presentation continued as Community Engagement Manager Dr. Rowan Beck guided users through the CGC interface and demonstrated ease of use by walking users through a Public Project focused on Bulk RNA-sequencing data as well as showing users a deep learning AI tool that utilized a Jupyter Labs Python Notebook and one of the Covid-19 imaging datasets provided by Judy to make predictions.

“We are now over the datathon, and the feedback we received was on how valuable the technical demonstration was. I was impressed with the launch of the imaging workflow at the end of the demonstration and seeing it work,” Judy later wrote in an email to the Seven Bridges team.

We’re honored to have been a part of this great data consortium and look forward to more involvement in the future!
